Afraid of speeding? The BMW Performance Center will cure that! As part of the A Girl’s Guide to Cars conference we had the opportunity to not only visit, but learn how to drive like a pro at the BMW Performance Center in Thermal Springs, CA. It was impressive, gorgeous and huge. A trip filled with palm trees, fast cars, lots of learning, exhilaration and FUN! I’ve never been a speed demon, so getting the opportunity to learn how to drive fast, turn into corners, and when to brake and accelerate was particularly a first for me.
BMW Performance Center is About More Than Speed
Although I DID get to drive fast, I also learned a lot about safety behind the wheel. When you think about it, that’s a prerequisite for any performance driver. You can’t operate a four-wheeled bullet without knowing how to be safe while you’re doing it. The center is actually so much more. It’s a vehicular school where you can hone driving skills and really learn what it means to be safe behind the wheel.
Classroom and Practical Application
In addition to all the speed. The Performance Center also teaches vehicle safety. Choices of instruction include the M Track, MINI Motoring School, or MINI Tricks and Stunts School. It’s all up to you and how much time and money you want to spend. They have about 100 vehicles available on-site, so there’s a wide variety to choose from.
I attended an hour-long class session where the instructor used his knowledge and diagrams (which I appreciated) to make it easy to understand the concepts they teach there. While in the classroom, the instructor went over maintaining safety in corners and on straightaways, with an emphasis on why this knowledge and the ability to execute it is so important to everyday driving.
After the class session was over, we were assigned a track experience. Oh boy! While on the first track – a road, we learned the practicalities involved with everything we’d been shown in the classroom. We were given a few laps of practice consisting of accelerating, decelerating, cornering, proper vehicle distance and more. It was the best school experience I’ve ever had!
Our second track was a smaller technical course where we got even more work on cornering and maneuverability.
Our last course was a long road course. It was basically a simplified race track. We got to experience pacing and car spacing. The last lap was the one that was the most fun – and scary – for me. We got to go fast. Really fast. In fact, most of us topped out at around 125 miles per hour.
The final experience of the day was one I will never forget. I got to do a ride along with a professional driver. If I went fast, this was greased lighting. The speed was intense. The cornering was precise. The roar of the engine was in my ears. I have never felt such a rush in a car – or anywhere else for that matter!
BMW Performance Center Combines Safety and Excitement
While I had an amazing, speedy time, I also learned a lot about safety, and there’s still more to learn. BMW Performance Center also offers classes and experiences that focus on inclement weather like rain, and they offer courses that help teens prepare for getting behind the wheel. If you’re in the area, it’s a great way to hone your own skills or prepare your child for the challenges they’ll face when they get behind the wheel by themselves.
What is the cost?
This would be a great experience! Book it either in at the South Carolina Performance Center or the Thermal Springs, California location which is paradise!. I’m trying to convince my husband to visit for our anniversary! Wouldn’t that be a cool way to celebrate? It’s not a cheap date but totally worth it and something unique! This is an unforgettable getaway that will creeate memories forever!
Prices start at $849 for a 1-day driving school; a 2-day runs $1699. For more information go HERE.
