Disclosure: This post is part of my all expense paid trip to Los Angeles, CA provided by Disney, in exchange for coverage. However, opinions are 100% mine.
During the most recent Disney Social Media Moms Conference, we got to watch footage of Disney’s Christopher Robin. This special film brought live memories of my childhood. Little did I know, I would be interviewing Ewan McGregor who plays the role of grown-up Christopher Robin during the Christopher Robin red carpet premiere in Los Angeles!
This 20-minute interview was amazing and we learned so much about him and his role in the film. A curiosity that kills me all the time, is to learn about how they first learned about being part of a particular movie.
One of the most popular questions we asked was how it felt to act with stuffed animals, to this question Ewan replied:
“So we’d play the scene a few times with the actors and with those stuffies. And by the time we did that, I got a real sense of what the scene felt like and how to play it. And then they would replace the teddy bear, the visual effects people needed theirs without hair, so they had gray versions of them all, they were just like a gray canvas, no hair. And then very basic they had little eyes and the nose. Just so you’re looking in the right place, but it was all gray. And then they had versions, then it gets a bit gruesome, they had versions with no heads. So you had to do the scene again with the stuffies with no heads. And then there was a Pooh version who had no head but also no arms or legs it was just a little tummy. It was like the horror version of the scene. And then we had to do scenes without the bear at all, nothing there to look at. And then sometimes a little bit, a little area like an antenna from a car with a light on top.”
We wondered what the message about fatherhood was in the film Christopher Robin, Ewan simply said that he walked away with the feeling that both mums and dads need to be present in their child’s everyday life. Ewan also went on to say that each of us may walk away with a different message on fatherhood when we watch the film. After watching Christopher Robin TWICE, I totally agree! So looking forward to watching it again for the THIRD time with hubby.
We were even more curious about what it was like to be on the set of Christopher Robin, to which Ewan told us that it was a lovely experience. “The director of the film, Marc Forster, was very open to new ideas and feedback about the film. As Marc watched playbacks of the film everyone could see his excitement as the film was being acted out exactly as he envisioned”. He remembers the first week they started to shoot the first part of the movie where he is alone with Pooh at the Hundred Acre Wood. Two weeks later Marc comes up to him and says: “It really worked! It looked like you were REALLY talking to him and it really looks really real!”
One of the things that Ewan shared with us was a memory of his childhood. During the filming, Ewan would often be reminded of his own dad and granddad. Back in those days, the father and child relationship wasn’t as close as it is in modern times. Throughout the Christopher Robin film, Ewan noticed that it almost depicts the evolution of parenting from those older days to modern times. Awwww
Who are the voice actors in Disney’s Christopher Robin?
- Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin
- Hayley Atwell as Evelyn Robin
- Bronte Carmichael as daughter Madeline Robin
- Mark Gatiss as Giles Winslow, Christopher Robin’s boss
- Jim Cummings voices both Winnie the Pooh and Tigger
- Brad Garrett as Eeyore
- Toby Jones as Owl
- Nick Mohammed as Piglet
- Peter Capaldi as Rabbit
- Sophie Okonedo as Kanga
What was Ewan McGregor’s favorite Character?
I was fascinated with the 100 Acre Wood characters! I can relate to Tigger who is extrovert, lots of energy, fun-loving. Always on the lookout for new experiences and adventure and not at all worried with understanding the world, but conscious of my responsibilities.
This is what Ewan shared with us:
“I really like all of them,” McGregor began, and I was hoping for more detail. We all like all of them, right? And, McGregor did not disappoint.
“Pooh is the one I spent the most amount of time with and he’s definitely ‘my guy, my little sidekick'” McGregor told us. It made me smile to hear Pooh described as “my little sidekick” although that perfectly explains the dynamic between Pooh and Christopher Robin, does not it?”
“I learned a lot from him [Pooh] because he’s very wise.”
The outcome of having Ewan McGregor play the voice of Christopher Robin is that this film leaves you with a positive feeling. Winnie the Pooh is much like a fairy godmother but in a more Zen Master style for Christopher Robin.
What a fun time!
