Disclosure: This post is part of my all expense paid trip to Los Angeles, CA provided by Disney, in exchange for coverage. However, opinions are 100% mine.
As part of the coverage in my recent press trip to Los Angeles for the Mary Poppins Returns Movie world premiere, I had the opportunity to interview Ben Whishaw the now-adult and widower Michael Banks, who does all in his powers to raise his three children. Emily Mortimer, who plays Jane his sister, tries to lend him a hand. They struggle to keep their home from being foreclosed.
What was the most challenging scene for you both to create?
Ben: “I think that the final scene when we’re in the… on the balloons was quite… challenging. I mean, everything was. But that was a… Because that had to be the climactic moment, you know? And… It’s weirdly much easier sometimes to play misery, and kind of… Whatever, you know. Grief or whatever. But being open-hearted and happy can be hard.”
Emily told us about a scene you will see as of December 19! That scene made her sad but she had to pretend it was fine. It is something human’s do when there are bad situations that happen in their life where they are trying to make it easier for themselves.
Emily’s Daughter – Mom’s in a Book!
I was fascinated when Emily shared about the time she was at Barnes and Noble with her daughter: “She found the book of Mary Poppins Returns, which I didn’t realize they’d even done the book of Mary Poppins. But there was Emily Blunt was on the front. And then she found a photo of me. And she’s never been more impressed by me ever. It was so funny. She kept telling everyone we met. Mom’s in a book!”
Emily also admitted that being in the movie was scary, due to her fear of heights and she can’t sing. Taking on this role as Jane on Mary Poppins Returns, was indeed a challenge but at the same time amazing since she had to get out of her comfort zone to both fly and sing!
Their Thoughts on Director, Rob Marshall
Ben: “Well… When Rob likes you, he really, really, really, really, likes you. He doesn’t hold back. You feel his love. You feel his… excitement about what you might bring.”
Emily: “My dad always said that if you tell people they’re beautiful or wonderful and clever and talented and special and amazing, they are.”
Ben Whishaw, the Singer – or is HE?
Ben had never done a musical before. He is not a singer, but he knew that Rob Marshall would guide him, and so he did! Rob told him to focus on being the character. No spoilers! But I will say that after you watch the movie, you will say: He’s not? Wow, he could have fooled me because the results were OUTSTANDING in my opinion.
